Certifying as a CDE (Certified Diabetes Educator)

On Wednesday , November 24th I took the Certified Diabetes Educator (CDE) examination and  am proud to say that I passed! I continue my long standing status as  one of three CDE’s in our office. Along with Michele Cordell,RD, CDE ,and Jody Daily,RD, CDE we strive to provide our patients with the most current and up to date diabetes knowlege and educational protocols.  As professional diabetes educators and individuals living with  Type 1 diabetes  for over 75 years combined, both I and Michelle understand the challenges  and the value of educating  patients about  insulin therapy, delivery methods of insulin, immunology,  and the social and emotional impact of living with diabetes at  various stages of life. Some 800 pages in THE ART AND SCIENCE OF DIABETES SELF-MANAGEMENT EDUCATION comphrehensively addresses  the  many aspects of diabetes education. As I studied and prepared for the CDE examination, I  continued to be  impressed and inspired by the many advances and new information in diabetes education.  We are teaching how the new medicines for  insulin resistance work, some of which enable weight loss, the most effective treatment for Diabetes Type 2.  There are new insulin pumps, even without tubing and continuous glucose sensors that show that science is approaching the time when there will be a closed loop insulin delivery system.    As we continue to get closer to the goal of curing or retarding diabetes  and its complications,  we are unfortunately seeing a dramatic rise of persons being diagnosed with Diabetes. As certfied diabetes educators, our goal is to provide our  patients  with the most  current and up to date diabetes information and treatment that will benefit their health and wellbeing in the years to come.
